Q: Would the BenQ TH685 be better for 3D viewing than the BenQ HT2050A because it's brighter?
A: I don’t watch 3D but I can’t imagine any other projector being as clear or bright as this one for the same money or even $100 more. I have a backyard theater with a 150” 9/16 screen and could not be more pleased.

TH585P has a 1.5~1.65 throw ratio, comes with 2 HDMI v1.4 ports, and a 10W speaker, whereas TH685P has a shorter throw ratio of 1.127~1.46, comes with 2 HDMI v2.0 ports, and a 5W speaker. As for the difference between TH585/TH585P and TH685/TH685P, the P version doesn't come with a VGA port while the original version has it.
