1. Getting Started

Before installing your Google Nest Thermostat, ensure that it is compatible with your heating and cooling system by visiting the Nest Compatibility Checker. The Nest Thermostat is designed to work without a C wire in most homes, but for some systems, including heating only, cooling only, zone controlled, and heat pump systems, you may need a C wire or other compatible power accessory.

2. Installation

  1. Power off your heating and cooling system by using a switch or turning off power at the fuse box.
  2. Remove the cover from your current thermostat.
  3. Take a picture of the wire locations on the old thermostat before removing them. This will help you during the installation process.
  4. Disconnect the wires from your old thermostat and remove it from the wall.
  5. Attach the included steel plate to the wall, if necessary, and mount the Nest Thermostat using the provided mounting screws.
  6. Connect the wires to the Nest Thermostat according to the Nest Compatibility Checker results and your old thermostat's wiring.
  7. Attach the Nest Thermostat display to the base.
  8. Power on your heating and cooling system.

3. Setting Up the Thermostat

  1. Download and install the Google Home app on your Android or iPhone device.
  2. Open the Google Home app and sign in with your Google account.
  3. Follow the in-app instructions to add your Nest Thermostat to your Google Home.
  4. Create an energy-efficient schedule in the Google Home app.

4. Using the Thermostat

To control the temperature, swipe the touch bar on the side of the thermostat or use the Google Home app. The Savings Finder feature will look for more ways to save energy and suggest schedule tweaks that you can accept with a tap. The thermostat also monitors your heating and cooling system and can send alerts if something doesn't seem right or when maintenance is needed.

5. Troubleshooting Tips

  1. If the thermostat is not turning on, check if the power to your heating and cooling system is turned on, and ensure that the thermostat is properly connected to the base.
  2. If the thermostat is displaying the temperature in Celsius instead of Fahrenheit, change the setting in the Google Home app.
  3. If the thermostat is not connecting to your Wi-Fi network, move the thermostat closer to your router or add a Wi-Fi extender to improve the signal strength.

6. Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I need a C wire for my Nest Thermostat?
Most homes won't need a C wire or power accessory. However, some systems, including heating only, cooling only, zone controlled, and heat pump systems, may require a C wire or other compatible power accessory. Visit the Nest Compatibility Checker to learn more.

To change the temperature display, open the Google Home app, select your Nest Thermostat, and change the temperature unit in the device settings.
  3. Can I control my Nest Thermostat remotely?
Yes, you can control your Nest Thermostat from anywhere using the Google Home app on your phone, laptop, or tablet.
  4. How do I reset my Nest Thermostat?

Frequently asked questions

Q: Does this work with the nest temperature sensor?
A: No, the sensors are NOT compatible with this specific one (Nest Thermostat). You also have to use the Google Home app to operate it remotely, as this Thermostat is NOT compatible with the Google Nest app.

Q: I have 4 wires, 1st wire is w/ 2nd y/3rd is g/4th is rh will this thermostat work with these wires?
A: 4 wires? Best you can do is hook up Red, Green, Common, them either; White (heat) or Yellow (AC). Hook-up which ever you need for that months weather. Then order the 5 or 8 wire cable to replace it, 8 wires would make it more future proof if you get a new HVAC system or new thermostat in 10 years. But then you can hook up all the correct wires when you replace the cable. It shouldn't be hard to replace, it's just a low voltage wire in the wall, most likely in a hallway above the HVAC unit. Everything will work now, and give you time to replace it a few weeks later.

Q: Does this smart thermostat have a lock setting? I have annoying people that like to mess with the thermostat.
A: Unfortunately, Nest Thermostat (2020) doesn't have a lock feature unlike previous Nest thermostat models.

Q: Work with carrier heat pumps?
A: Nest Thermostat works with most 24V heating and cooling systems. This includes gas, electric, forced air, heat pump, oil, hot water, solar, geothermal and even radiant systems. We recommend using our Compatibility Checker tool on this link to verify if your system is compatible: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9246656 or you may reach out to us anytime for assistance here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp

Q: Can this thermostat function with zwave vs WiFi?
A: Unfortunately, Google Nest devices don't directly support Zigbee or Z-wave. However, it can work and control smart devices using either of the two protocols. You may need a brand specific hub or a universal hub that has a Google Assistant integration.

Q: My hvac installer told me the nest thermostat i bought (google nest thermostat e) does not work with a 2-stage system. what nest thermostat works?
A: Though the Nest thermostats are designed to work with most 24 V systems, we suggest visiting the online Compatibility Checker to check if your heating and cooling systems, including a 2-stage system, are compatible with Nest thermostats. You can also quickly tell if you have one of these systems without having to use the Compatibility Checker or to look at your thermostat’s wiring here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9246656 You can also get in touch with us anytime for real time assistance and guidance here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp

Q: Would I need 2 of this thermostat for a 2 story house?
A: There's only one thermostat for a home. However, Nest does sell a sensor unit that connects with the Nest thermostat. With this you can use the sensor for the main temperature of your house. Whatever temperature you set on the sensor will be the temperature the thermostat heats up or cools down to.

Q: Does this work with google home?
A: Absolutely! Nest Thermostat works with Google Home.

Q: My current thermostat looks like it has a c wire attached, am I good or do I need the adapter still?
A: If you have the C - wire attached, you won't need the adapter.

Q: Does this work with my google home pod??
A: Homepod doesn´t have any support for Nest Thermostat at the moment.

Overall, it is important to research and ensure compatibility with your specific HVAC system before purchasing the Nest Thermostat. While it is designed to work with most systems, there may be some exceptions. Additionally, there are certain features such as the lock setting that may not be available on this specific model. However, the Nest Thermostat offers many energy-saving features such as turning itself down when you leave and a programmable schedule to help save on energy costs. It is also easy to install and use with the Google Home app.
